Imagine yourself as a benevolent ruler of the planet. What would you do to create a perfect global society? How would you go about it? I would look at the four interconnected subsets of humanity: Individuals, Partnerships, Communities, and Societies. Let’s begin with Individuals. Research on happiness reveals that close relationships, a purposeful job or focus, a positive outlook, faith, exercise, health, and security are the keys to creating happy individuals.
Having emotionally healthy individuals is the foundation that everything rests on, so how do I, as the ruler, support this goal. I can provide security, build gyms and running paths, and define a vision of positivity for everyone to work toward with their individual skills and talents, but the rest would be up to them.
Partnerships, or relationships are the glue that binds people and the most important contributor to happiness because they introduce positive concepts like belonging, love, respect, and support. The need for these things is built into our DNA. Along with oxygen, food, procreation and security, they are the basic requirements of a healthy and happy life.
Healthy individuals and strong supportive relationships are the foundation of successful communities and societies. The truth is, we don’t need a benevolent ruler to cure whatever problems our societies experience. We simply need to drive positive change with our personal actions and watch them grow. We often feel that we are controlled by government, corporations, and the media, and that may be true if we let them. The truth is, by simply improving ourselves and our relationships, positive change will occur, one friendship at a time.
